Southwest Airlines on May 9 will trim one daily round-trip flight between Tampa and four destinations -- Fort Lauderdale; Hartford, Conn.; Indianapolis; and Providence, R.I. -- but will maintain nonstop service between Tampa and those destinations in a systemwide reduction of flights.
Tampa International Airport's busiest carrier will serve Fort Lauderdale with eight daily flights, Providence with two and Hartford and Indianapolis with one each on schedules between May 9 and June 26, the airline announced today.
Tampa fared better than Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, which will lose six and eight flights, respectively. Southwest eliminated 32 round-trip flights nationwide and added 19, for a loss of 13 flights overall.
Florida's reductions coincide with the seasonal slowdown of visitor traffic.
"In today's environment, it is more important than ever to maximize our productivity with our aircraft," Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly said in a release. "Our optimization exercise is a case of eliminating unproductive flights and reallocating our aircraft to match supply with demand, all the while focusing on key cities such as Denver."
