Tampa International Airport ranked fourth nationwide in on-time arrivals performance in October and seventh in departure performance, up from 19th and 13th a year ago, a U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics report showed.
Flights arrived on time 84.6 percent of the time and departed on time 84.7 percent of the time from the Tampa airport. Flights within 15 minutes of schedule are regarded as on time.
On-time flight performance by the nation's largest airlines declined in October to 77.3 percent of all flights, compared with 86.2 percent in September and 86 percent in October 2008.
In October, airlines reported that:
• 8.52 percent of their flights were delayed by aviation system delays, compared with 4.92 percent in September.
• 7.20 percent were delayed by late-arriving aircraft, compared with 3.88 percent in September.
• 5.26 percent were delayed by factors within the airline's control, such as maintenance or crew problems, compared with 3.89 percent in September.
• 0.52 percent were delayed by extreme weather, compared with 0.37 percent in September.
• 0.03 percent were delayed for security reasons, compared with 0.02 percent in September.
