Anyone who has been stuck on the phone with an unhelpful bank representative knows how frustrating it can be to get help with foreclosure.
That's why the nonprofit Housing & Education Alliance is holding free workshops and offering free one-on-one counseling. Anyone facing foreclosure or worried about getting behind in payments is invited to attend.
The workshops are from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on June 23 and June 24 and July 14 and July 15 at the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, 1002 E. Palm. Ave. in Tampa.
Topics include the pre-foreclosure phase, foreclosure options, managing a financial crisis, communicating with mortgage loan servicers, rescue scams, consequences of foreclosure and rebuilding your credit after foreclosure.
Florida had the third highest foreclosure rate in the nation in May, and many end up turning to for-profit companies that collect thousands of dollars to help troubled homeowners modify their mortgages.
Some of these companies have been sued by governmental agencies for charging upfront fees - which is against the law in Florida - and then doing nothing to help the homeowner.
Experts recommend homeowners facing foreclosure turn to non-profits. To find HUD-certified housing counselors - who work for free - call 1-888-995- HOPE.
