Florida transit ridership in 2008 improved by more than 3 percent compared with 2007 while motorists drove 844 million fewer miles, a study released today by Environment Florida reported.

Nationwide, Americans took 10.7 billion transit trips in 2008, a 4 percent increase over 20flor07 and the highest level of ridership in 52 years, the report showed. Vehicle miles in the United States declined by 3.6 percent.

Representatives from multiple environmental groups and Tampa City Council member Linda Saul-Sena gathered at Tampa's Union Station Tuesday to discuss the study's results and show support for transit initiatives.

Adam Rivera of Environment Florida encouraged Florida's U.S. senators to support an increase from dedicating 1 percent of potential cap and trade carbon energy tax proceeds as outlined in H.R. 2454 to 10 percent in the final Congressional proposal.

The U.S. Senate began consideration of the bill this month.
