The Tampa Port Authority board this morning approved providing $150,000 per year from 2011 through 2013 to The Tampa Historic Streetcar Inc. budget, continuing a funding pattern that has provided $1.45 million to streetcar since 2002.
The streetcar's fiscal 2011 budget for operating expenses is $2.1 million. The primary rationale for the port authority's financial support is that the port owns and leases the land on which the Channelside business, restaurant and entertainment complex operates, board members said.
Twenty percent of the streetcar trips involve the Channelside station.
"This has some value to Tampa and if it goes away it would be a real bad thing," port authority board member Carl Lindell said.
