A Tampa manufacturing facility expects to create about 200 jobs, starting later this year, as part of a planned $16.5 million expansion.
The jobs would range from skill positions, requiring prior education and experience, to jobs where the workers receive on-site training, said Tom Trotter, vice president and general manager of Chromalloy Casting Tampa Corp. The new positions would all pay more than the state average of $39,000.
"That's music to our ears," said Ken Hagan, chairman of the Hillsborough County Commission.
Chromalloy manufactures components for the turbine sections of jet engines used by commercial aircraft, military aircraft and tanks, and power-generating gas turbines.
The expansion is expected to begin within a few weeks, Trotter said. The company, which produced 228,000 components last year, is already ordering new equipment and rearranging its Anderson Road facility.
Chromalloy currently employs about 195 people. Trotter said that in addition to doubling the work force, he hopes to double sales once the expansion is complete.
Chromalloy will advertise the positions through the county's Web site.
Some jobs will be filled this year, Trotter said, with the bulk being filled by early 2010.
Hagan, who chairs the county's Economic Stimulus Task Force, said Monday's announcement reflects the county's ability to retain and create work locally.
"One of the stated goals of the task force is to send a message: We're open for business," Hagan said. "Clearly, this expansion demonstrates this."
