St. Pete Times publisher Petty to step down

Marty Petty, publisher of the St. Petersburg Times, is resigning in an effort to streamline management, the newspaper announced to employees Wednesday.

Petty, who has been with the Times for nine years, told Times staff by letter that Times Publishing has become a smaller operation since selling its Congressional Quarterly publication this summer. The media company needed to reduce management to reflect its smaller size and the difficult market conditions, she said.

Paul Tash, editor, chief executive and chairman of the company, said Petty will stay with the company for several more weeks. Other managers in the newspaper company's business side will pick up additional responsibilities after her departure, Tash says in his own letter to employees.

"Her contributions helped make our organization better, and we will miss her as a colleague and a friend," Tash wrote.

Petty also is executive vice president of Times Publishing Co., the newspaper's parent. Before joining the Times in 2000, Petty had been publisher and CEO of The Hartford Courant newspaper in Connecticut.
