Repair Increases Garage Price

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A crack in a concrete beam for a parking garage under construction at Tampa International Airport will cost $1.93 million to repair, airport officials said Thursday.

The crack, which poses no danger to construction crews, was discovered in October during expansion of the six-story economy lot. The repairs are not expected to delay the scheduled May completion of the second section of the expansion, which will add 2,100 spaces.

The first section opened before Thanksgiving with 3,100 spaces.

Engineers say unforeseen soil conditions and voids in underground lime rock caused a caisson that was placed about 140 feet deep to sink about 3 inches.

Crews are installing additional supports and increasing the foundation size. The crack will be filled with epoxy to prevent rusting of steel inside the concrete beam.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority approved changing the expansion project contract with Brasfield & Gorrie LLC to $63.3 million.
