TV transition not so smooth

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The long-awaited transition from analog to digital television came with plenty of glitches for some viewers Friday.

Phones started ringing off the hook at the local CBS affiliate, WTSP, Channel 10, the moment technicians unplugged the station's analog broadcasts at noon.

One caller, a Comcast cable customer, said the CBS affiliate's high-definition feed disappeared from his screen. Some Bright House Networks customers called to say they lost the signal, too, which wasn't supposed to happen - the switchover was supposed to affect only broadcast signals.

Another caller said his digital television converter box died. The blanket advice to callers was to have their digital TV converter boxes "rescan" for channels, which tends to fix most problems.

All major network affiliates unplugged their analog feeds Friday as part of the national transition; NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox, as well as smaller stations and some Spanish broadcasters.
