Tampa lures more cruises

Royal Caribbean International will increase its annual sailings from the Port of Tampa from 28 to 44 beginning in October 2010 and replace the Grandeur of the Seas with the 2,500-passenger Radiance of the Seas on Tampa cruises.

The 90,000-ton Radiance will accommodate 54 more passengers than the 70,000-ton Grandeur, the cruise line said in a news release.

Itineraries will include four-night sailings with a port of call at Cozumel, Mexico, and a five-night sailing that adds Costa Maya, Mexico.

The inaugural Oct. 9 sailing will be seven days with calls at George Town, Grand Cayman; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; and Belize City, Belize.

Carnival Cruise Lines and Holland America also sail from the Port of Tampa.

Cruise line passenger traffic increased 17.8 percent at the Port of Tampa in January compared with a year ago - up to 84,546 embarking and disembarking passengers, a Cruise Line International Association report showed. Because of the recession, cruise lines have trimmed prices and increased marketing.
