The Port of Tampa on Thursday announced completion of the reconstruction of 45-year-old Berth 230, which handles 37 percent of all petroleum products - gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel - for West Central Florida.
That includes supplies for Tampa and Orlando International Airports.
The $3.1 million project was funded in part with $2.2 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
The Florida Department of Transportation and Port of Tampa revenue provided the balance of the funding.
The pier's bulkhead was on the brink of collapse and threatening operations when federal funding was announced in August 2009.
The reconstruction completed the first phase of redeveloping petroleum facilities, port spokesman Andy Fobes says by e-mail.
The pier work ensures that it will continue to provide "reliable and crucial service and can do so more efficiently," Fobes says.
The Port of Tampa handled 3.9 million tons of petroleum products from October through March, 13 percent more than the year-ago period.
