For Beatriz Soto and other parents struggling with expenses, affording school supplies for their children is a major concern.
That's why Soto, a mother of three, considers Metropolitan Ministries' Backpacks of Hope program a "life-saver."
The charity packs thousands of backpacks with supplies for needy children. Included are binders, scissors, markers, paper and pencils and other items.
This year, the organization will provide for 5,000 students in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.
"This is a blessing for everyone because times are tough." Soto said. "I have three kids. I'm having a hard time making ends meet, and coming out here and knowing that they're going to have their school supplies is a blessing."
In the down economy, many families are in need of help, said AnaMaria Mendez, a spokeswoman for Metropolitan Ministries.
Because of the added demand, the ministry is in dire need of donations, she said.
"If you are out doing shopping this week, if you could pick up an extra item where you're picking some up for your children, it's going to go a long way." Mendez said. "Scissors, binders, anything is going to make a child very happy."
Drop off donations at Metropolitan Ministries, 2001 N. Florida Ave. Families will begin receiving backpacks this weekend.
