Major contractors have begun soliciting information from local and small businesses and those qualified as Disadvantaged Business Enterprise subcontractors interested in working on the Tampa-Orlando phase of Florida's High Speed Rail Project.
More than 1,000 representatives from major contractors and small businesses gathered Tuesday afternoon at the Tampa Convention Center for the first of three state orientation sessions on competing for subcontracts for the high speed rail project.
Small business owners were encouraged to contact state officials for help in gaining access to potential contracts by logging onto floridarhighspeedrail.org for updates on the contracting process..
The Florida Department of Transportation DBE certification application can be accessed at www.dot.state.fl.us/equalopportunityoffice/dbecertification.shtm.
Contracts for Florida's $2.7 billion project become available in two phases.
The first is an "Early Works Safety Program" with construction beginning in 2011 to prepare the high speed rail corridor, mostly in the median of Interstate 4, for eastbound and westbound tracks.
Full system construction is scheduled to begin in 2012 under direction of a single, main contractor that will be responsible for designing, building, operating, maintaining and financing the project. The contractor selected will have first rights of refulsa to build the Orlando-Miami phase of the project if funds become available to extend the high speed project.
Additional business orientation sessions are scheduled Wednesday at the Lakeland Civic Center and Thursday at the Orange County Convention Center, both beginning at 2:30 p.m.
