Wal-Mart hiring for South Tampa store
Officials at retail giant Wal-Mart expect to hire about 300 workers for the company's new location on Gandy Boulevard in South Tampa.
The Gandy location is set to open Oct. 27 at 4302 W. Gandy Blvd. A hiring center is open at 4644 W. Gandy Blvd. Job-seekers can also apply at any Walmart store and at www.walmartstores.com/careers.
HP initiates plan to repurchase stock
Hewlett-Packard Co. said Monday its board has authorized the repurchase of $10 billion in shares to manage share dilution from employee stock plans and to buy back shares opportunistically.
The announcement comes as the personal computer maker is involved in a bidding contest with rival Dell Inc. for the data storage company 3Par Inc.
On Friday, HP raised its offer for 3Par to $30 a share, or $1.88 billion, and 3Par later withdrew its support for that offer. Dell is considering raising its offer of $27 a share.
Consumers spent more in July
Americans are spending a little more this summer but hardly enough to rejuvenate the economy.
Consumer spending rose 0.4 percent in July, with much of the strength coming from increased demand for autos, the Commerce Department reported Monday. It was the best showing since March but came after three months when spending was flat.
Chrysler bringing Fiat back to U.S.
Chrysler on Monday told 400 dealers about its plans to bring the Fiat brand back to the United States after a 30-year absence, starting this year with the Fiat 500 minicar.
Fiat-run Chrysler Group LLC wants the 500 to become a strong contender in the U.S. small-car market. The car will be sold by 165 Chrysler Group dealers in 125 markets starting in December.
Dealers have until Sept. 22 to apply for Fiat franchises.
