A yoga class at the College Harbor Retirement Center in St. Petersburg is helping keep seniors who use wheelchairs fit and healthy.
Although many people think of yoga as an exercise for active adults, it's also beneficial to those with limited mobility.
Yoga is a 5,000-year-old system of physical discipline that combines breathing, meditation and posture. It is an ideal fitness choice for almost anyone, and instructor Wendy Hessinger says she can prove it. "Some of my students are in their 90s, so if they can do yoga anyone can."
If age hasn't deterred students at College Harbor, neither can a wheelchair. as Hessinger adapts the yoga poses for her class and teaches on their level - while sitting herself.
"It's great," says student Marie Powell, "you do what you can and work at your own level."
While these students may be sitting, the mind, body soul benefits of yoga still apply.
Student Susanna Bouquet-Chester looks forward to the class. "It limbers me up and keeps me going." And going is the key. No matter who you are, research shows exercise can make you look and feel your best.
This class is definitely for the young at heart, thanks to the ancient practice of yoga.
