Moffitt Cancer Center offered an early look Wednesday at its new free-standing satellite center being built near International Plaza.
Moffitt is leasing a 50,000-square-foot building from Tampa International Airport for $373,000 to operate the treatment center. The two-story building once was used by Continental Airlines and is undergoing $22 million in renovations.
Moffitt uses space at Tampa General Hospital, but that lease expires in June. The new center will enable the cancer center to serve more patients in areas that are at capacity. Moffitt officials expect to see about 200 patients a day.
The new center, set to open in July, will include 18 exam rooms, four consultation areas and 24 chemotherapy-infusion chairs where patients will have views of the TIA airfields. Employees at the Tampa General center will move to the new facility, which will create at least 55 medical jobs, Moffitt leaders said.
Some oncology physicians will base their practices at the new facility. Services will include a blood draw area, infusion services and radiation therapy.
The center also will enable Moffitt to provide enhanced patient experiences, said Nancy Ziel, director of clinic operations.
"Because of space, we'll be able to improve the registration process and go to an entire electronic medical record system," she said. "That hopefully will cut down on wait time for patients."
The high-traffic West Shore area will bring more visibility for the center and more convenience for patients, Ziel said.
"We hope to partner with International Plaza for some educational opportunities, and certainly having the mall near us will be convenient for family members who wait at the center," she said.
The location's proximity to major highways also was a consideration when choosing the location.
