A South Florida developer wants to build the area's first Container Store at a busy intersection in Tampa's West Shore area.
Saber Real Estate Advisors expects to build about 40,000 square feet of retail space at the southwest corner of Spruce Street and West Shore Boulevard. The site has housed a rental car business in the past.
It plans three buildings there: a 24,500-square-foot building for The Container Store, and buildings potentially for a bank and another store, said Saber managing member Michael Klinger.
Shoppers probably will be most interested in The Container Store. Its nearest store to the Tampa Bay area is in Hallandale Beach on the East Coast. According to its website, The Container Store stocks more than 10,000 household items in a superstore format. As its name suggests, many products are for storage and organizing.
This seems like a risky time to plan a new store, given the weak economy. But, Klinger said it's not a speculative project, because he has already signed The Container Store to the site. Also, the location has been underused for years and might've been developed several years ago if not for the recession, he said.
He expects to break ground in May and finish a year later. "The corner is, I would call Main and Main for Tampa," Klinger said.
Saber is a real estate development and investment firm with offices in South Florida and New York state. It has a contract to buy the property from DTG Operations Inc., said Ron Weaver, a real estate attorney working on the project. DTG is a subsidiary of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, according to a Dollar Thrifty news release.
