FDA To Inspect Tainted Pops

TAMPA - The Food and Drug Administration will collect and inspect the Pokemon brand lollipops that Polk County authorities rounded up last week, deputies say.

An FDA inspector is supposed to pick up the lollipops at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said.

About 20 lollipops were X-rayed last week after a Mulberry woman found metal embedded in a lollipop purchased at the Dollar General Store at 6735 S. Florida Ave., according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Lisa Potter bought a bag of 10 Pokemon Valentine Cards and Pops on Feb. 7. Her son was sorting them Wednesday night to take to school and saw a piece of metal resembling a blade protruding from a sucker. Potter took the candy to the Mulberry Police Department, which called the sheriff's office.

Two Pokemon lollipops analyzed so far, including the one Potter's son found, appear to have metal, Wood said.

"Others have particles of an unknown origin," she said.

The 8,300 Dollar General stores nationwide have pulled the candy off their shelves, Sheriff Grady Judd said last week.

There is no indication of foul play, Judd said.
