What he did: Double bass player in The Florida Orchestra for 21 years
What he does: Music practitioner, playing double bass, at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center
The switch: Goldstein practices meditation, which for him is deep inner listening. The message began appearing once a month: You need to do community service, at a hospital.
He volunteered at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and liked it so much he earned a certificate to be a music practitioner. He has training to recognize what patients are feeling, sometimes without saying a word, and matches music with their moods. The music helps release their sadness or anxiety.
The angst: Goldstein's decision to leave the orchestra was the toughest in his life. He sent the resignation letter on March 31, 2005, by e-mail. But his fingers trembled over the send button for 10 minutes as he listened to his wife, Mary Grace Bronson, on the phone. 'You know we've been through this, you love this, don't worry, you've done that for 21 years!' she said. Finally, he pushed.
The reward: Goldstein is now employed at Moffitt. It's still a part-time position, but he hasn't looked back. 'This is a high point of my existence so far. I don't think I have done anything more meaningful or beautiful than this.'
