NEW PORT RICHEY - A section of Main Street will be closed from 3 p.m. Sunday until early 8 a.m. Tuesday while construction crews install a new underground drainage pipe.
The closure of the downtown thoroughfare will reroute traffic away from the intersection of Main and Adams streets.
City officials said customers will still be able to reach downtown businesses.
The $2.17 million project includes a new stormwater collection system along Missouri and Nebraska avenues and a new stormwater main and treatment unit on Adams.
Funding includes $1.15 million from a public works reserve account plus a Community Development Block Grant and a Southwest Florida Water Management District grant.
City officials say the improvements will alleviate chronic flooding downtown.
Originally, the project was to be finished by the end of this month, but a series of recent setbacks have extended the completion date to the beginning of January.
Downtown merchants have complained that the project has hurt their businesses.
