Road Renaming To Honor Deputy

Published: December 1, 2007

BRANDON - Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Harrison spent 28 years trying to keep Hillsborough County roads safe, and next week the county will rename the stretch of road where he was killed this year in his honor.

The portion of Lumsden Road between South Kings Avenue and South Parsons Road will be designated Sgt. Harrison Memorial Highway.

Hillsborough County commissioners have planned a ceremony at 9 a.m. Wednesday in honor of Harrison's service. There also will be a permanent marker erected on the half-mile stretch of Lumsden Road.

Harrison's children are expected to attend, said sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter.

The longtime deputy was shot dead early Aug. 15 after working a drunken driving checkpoint. His assailant later was shot and killed by a sheriff's sniper after he fired on officers again.

Carter said designating the roadway in Harrison's honor is "a wonderful gesture and honor to law enforcement."

Harrison, 55, was a highway and safety specialist trained in traffic enforcement. He was commanding Operation 3-D, a joint effort of several law enforcement agencies to crack down on drunken driving in Hillsborough County, when he was killed.
