SPRING HILL - A scoreless third quarter proved to be a disastrous and deciding blow for the Fox Chapel Tigers girls' varsity basketball squad Thursday night.
West Hernando Middle School took full advantage of two missed free throws by Fox Chapel and added three field goals of their own, one by Lyndsey Pospisil, who led all scorers with six points, and two by Rhiannon Venturella that sealed the deal for the Eagles, 20-12.
"Compared to what we've been doing, we worked really well today as a team," said Golden Eagle Head Coach Ginny Gaustad. "Our passes were a little off, but we're still working on it.
Pospisil saw action in each quarter, led all players with six rebounds, and added a steal and a blocked shot to her numbers.
West Hernando's Kristen Jones had five points with three rebounds and went 3-for-3 from the line. Morgan Hagar had three points in the fourth quarter and Shania Vazquez was 2-for-2 from the foul line.
"We did real well," said Gaustad. "I think honestly they actually looked for the inside passes and they actually worked together and rebounded."
Fox Chapel Head Coach David Schlechter was optimistic after the final buzzer sounded. "They've gotten better. The one thing I do ask is that they play hard all the time and that's what I got out of them tonight. At a few points in the game we ran our offense perfectly...actually cutting more than they used to, getting open, rebounding better," he said proudly.
"We couldn't have done what they did tonight three weeks ago. We lost by about 25 (points) to these guys last time. It was 6-6 at halftime. That's unbelievable. I have about maybe three girls that played organized basketball before this year so I'm teaching them how to play."
April Gillis led the Tigers with four points, all in the first quarter, and had two rebounds and a steal. Alexis Adams, Ashlee Brudermann, Alexis Corea and Melanie Pugliese each had a bucket. Fox Chapel's Brianna Johnson had four rebounds, five steals and two assists. The Tigers went 0-for-4 from the foul line.
Under pressure
The junior varsity game was faster paced, thanks to the continuous full court pressure put on by the Tigers. "We had the plan of coming in and pressing them every time," said Coach Mike Adams. "Most middle schools have a hard time with the press."
But the Fox Chapel forwards proved to be the game-breakers in the 35-22 victory.
Dominique Gatrick led all scorers with 13 points, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Sarah Robinson had 10 points with six rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a steal
Other contributors for the Tigers included Lauren Grimsland with four points in the third quarter, Brooke Sharp with a field goal and Heather Collins with three field goals. Jazelyn Ramos had four steals and a block and Heather Masters added one assist, one steal and one rebound.
"We rolled," Adams beamed. "Everybody did what they had to do. It was a total team effort."
