The Look Of A Leader

Published: December 2, 2007

PORT RICHEY - When you see Danielle Amato at school, at practice or warming up prior to a match, she likely will have a smile on her face. Among the reasons her teammates selected Amato as captain of Ridgewood High's soccer team were her friendly demeanor and positive attitude.

"I try to get along with everyone," she said.

But, once a match begins, the four-year varsity defender's smile is replaced by a stare completely focused on every player on the field. Her head and eyes move constantly from side to side, anticipating the next moves by her opponents and searching to gain an advantage for her teammates.

"Danielle knows how to read the game. She has an uncanny ability to anticipate where the ball is going to go. This is an enormous benefit for us, both on offense and defense," said Amato's coach, Melissa Welch.

Because of Amato's instincts and tenacious defense, opponents rarely get past her. Throughout a match, Amato can be heard signaling instructions to teammates.

"I cover a large area from near our goalie to the midfield line. This allows me to stay close to the action and be involved in all aspects of the game," she said.

Amato's knowledge and experience have helped the Rams get off to a fast start, including a 3-1 upset of rival Land O' Lakes.

The younger players, in particular, have benefited from Amato's mentoring during practices and matches.

"She'll tell me, for example, to go out wide. The next thing I know, the ball arrives in a position for an easy shot," said freshman forward Kayla Labbe, who is among the team's scoring leaders with three goals.

Amato's dedication has paid off with her being the recipient of the Coach's Award, which goes to the player demonstrating hard work and leadership.

"Whether we're up or down, Danielle is always giving her best," Welch said.

In addition to her excellence in soccer, Amato carries a 3.8 grade-point average.

"Soccer allows me to stay in shape and meet new friends, but getting an education is my top priority," she said.

Following graduation, Amato plans to study forensic science, possibly at Saint Leo University or St. Petersburg College.

In addition to working a part-time job, Amato volunteers on a number of projects at Ridgewood. Her favorite activity is being a member of Peer Connection, where she mentors freshmen.

"Helping someone for an entire year brings me so much satisfaction," Amato said. "Who knows, my small efforts may have a huge impact in keeping someone in school. Now that's a victory that really counts."

The smile returns. Amato's positive impact has let others smile, too.
