TAMPA - A Tampa man hit his 10-year-old son several times with a lawn chair and several times with a belt, then used the chair and belt to hit a neighbor who tried to intervene, Tampa police say.
Harvey Leon Nichols, 50, was arrested at 6:20 p.m. Saturday. He faces a felony count of aggravated child abuse and a felony count of aggravated battery.
A Tampa Police Department affidavit says he pushed his son to the concrete Saturday and hit the boy's back three to four times with a lawn chair at the family's home at 1124 W. Arch St., according to a police report. Then he hit his son three times with a belt.
When Nichols' neighbor tried stopping the beating, Nichols hit her with belt and chair, the arrest affidavit states.
The boy's face was swollen, and he felt pain in his left leg, police said. The neighbor had a 3-inch mark on her left leg. Neither required medical attention.
Nichols' son was placed with a family member. Nichols remains in the Orient Road jail with no bail set.
