Two men were injured in Dunedin this morning in a head-on collision involving a shrimp delivery truck and a car going the wrong way on Bayshore Boulevard, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's office.
Traffic near Curlew Creek Bridge was diverted for nearly four hours after the 3:30 a.m. wreck as thousands of shrimp that had spilled onto the roadway were removed, sheriff's authorities said.
One of the men, Scott Gregory Scoville, 29, of Palm Harbor, was driving a Toyota Corolla north in the southbound lane of Bayshore Boulevard as he approached Curlew Creek Bridge, Sgt. Jim Bordner said.
The Toyota hit a curb on the bridge, struck the concrete bridge railing and then went 300 feet, exiting the bridge, before hitting head-on an Isuzu truck driven by Robert Wayne Miller, 64, of New Port Richey, sheriff's officials said.
Miller tried to avoid the Corolla by swerving off the road, sheriff's officials said. The impact caused thousands of shrimp to spill from a large tank mounted on the back of the truck, officials said.
Both drivers suffered serious but non-life-threatening head injuries and had to be taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital. Fog kept a medical helicopter from landing, sheriff's officials said.
The Florida Department of Transportation was called to inspect the bridge for structural damage, sheriff's officials said.
No charges were filed, but the investigation had not been completed.
