DETROIT - More than half of office workers with Internet access will shop for gifts from work this holiday season, according to a recent survey.
The survey found that 54.5 percent will shop from work. That's 68.6 million people who are expected to find time in their busy workdays to shop from the office computer.
Nearly three-fourths of online retailers planned special promotions for the Monday after Thanksgiving, dubbed Cyber Monday, according to the survey released by Shop.org. The deals ranged from e-mail campaigns, with 32 percent of online retailers participating, to specific deals, 29.9 percent, and one-day sales, 28.9 percent.
A quarter of online retailers surveyed were offering free shipping on all purchases that day.
More than 500 retailers will post deals on HSN.com throughout the holiday season.
"As more people rely on the Internet for holiday shopping, retailers have stepped up their game to compete," said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, a division of the National Retail Federation.
The Internet will influence 30.2 percent of holiday sales this year, up from 28.9 percent in 2006, according to Shop.org.
Other survey findings include:
•Men are more likely to shop from work than women, 57.3 percent versus 51.7 percent.
•Adults 18 to 24 are more likely to shop online from work than any other age group, at 72.9 percent.
The poll on consumer shopping at work was conducted for Shop.org by BIGresearch from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7. The poll of 7,982 consumers had a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point. The poll of 116 online retailers was conducted Sept. 26 to Oct. 8 by BizRate Research.
