Lt. Col. John T. Czernis was appointed director of the Florida Highway Patrol today.
Czernis had been interim director and previously served as the deputy director of special operations.
Czernis was appointed interim director after Col. Chris Knight resigned as chief in September. A six-month state investigation found that Knight falsified a memo date.
Czernis earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Rollins College in 1991 and a master's degree from Florida State University in public administration in 2005. Czernis is a 30-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol. He began his career in law enforcement in 1974 with the Vero Beach Police Department.
