TAMPA - TAMPA - TAMPA -- A motorcyclist died this afternoon after striking the side of an empty school bus, police said.
Tampa police did not identify the motorcyclist, a man thought to be in his 50s, because his family had not been notified.
He was not wearing a helmet.
About 2 p.m., the motorcyclist was westbound on Columbus Drive when the bus, which was traveling east, turned north onto Matanzas Avenue, police said.
Skid marks in the right westbound lane showed the motorcyclist braked but could not stop to avoid hitting the bus, Tampa police Detective Mike Willingham said.
The collision dented the side of the bus behind the right rear wheel.
Police did not identify the bus driver, who was shaken but not injured.
Officers rerouted traffic for a few blocks around the crash until about 4:30 p.m.
