Regarding "Ybor City Parking Meter-Free For Month" (Metro, Nov. 30):
Twenty-one thousand dollars in revenue? That's what the city is making a month on parking in Ybor?
Between the costs of "meter enforcers," parking department overhead, equipment maintenance, not to mention lost business, city goodwill, tax revenue and the time spent debating it, I'll bet those meters are costing the city millions more than they are making (even if they can make a little extra writing $35 violations to those poor souls gullible enough to underestimate the time it takes to drink a cafe con leche).
Some of my favorite restaurants and stores are in Ybor, but I do not want to risk meter parking tickets, or park in a serpentine garage four blocks away, or pay $5 cash to park in a dubious looking and dark dirt lot when there are empty spaces near where I want to go. The cost and penalties of parking has sent me and many others elsewhere for the last 10 years. I can't wait to rediscover Ybor during the meter-free month!
Thanks to Mayor Pam and all those involved. Let's hope for all our sakes the meters are removed permanently.
