BRADENTON - A man was killed early Sunday in a fire at a storage shed behind a home, a Cedar Hammock Fire & Rescue battalion chief said.
The fire was reported about 6:50 a.m. in the 4700 block of Mineola Street. The shed was completely engulfed in flames by the time the first fire crew arrived. The blaze was quickly extinguished.
Sheriff's and fire officials did not immediately release the victim's name, age or address. A person at the house said the man had been hired recently to do painting work.
Authorities said the shed was poorly ventilated and used to store paint and paint thinner. The man, whose body was found in the shed, was a smoker, Detective Bobby Lewis of the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.
Detectives were interviewing several people who were at the home Sunday. One man told the Herald-Tribune he saw a "ball of orange."
