WIMAUMA - Save Our Seabirds, a bird sanctuary at 2709 State Road 579, is preparing to move to a new home in Sarasota.
"We hope to be in before the first of the year," said Lee Fox, the owner.
The site is the former Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary, a refuge near Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, which closed about a year ago.
"It's a mess right now," Fox said of the site. "Everything must be torn down and cleaned up."
She will move her song birds, birds of prey and seabirds to the new home after the cleanup is completed.
Fox was approved for ownership by the review committee from Sarasota's purchasing department.
The next step is to take her proposal before the city commissioners, which should be soon, Fox said.
