FORT LAUDERDALE - A man pleaded not guilty Monday to fatally shooting a Broward County sheriff's deputy who was taking him to a court appearance.
Michael Mazza, 41, is charged with first-degree murder, carjacking, escape and armed robbery in Deputy Paul Rein's death. A grand jury indicted him last week.
He is charged with killing Rein, 76, with Rein's gun on Nov. 7. Investigators say Mazza, now serving a life term for robbery, shot Rein while being taken to court on another robbery charge.
