TAMPA - Tampa Bay Tech guard Fredrick Drayton scored five of his team-high 13 points in the final minute of the fourth quarter to give the Titans a 59-53 win against King in a Class 5A-District 8 boys basketball game Monday.

Drayton sank his third 3-pointer of the night to give Tech (4-2, 1-2) a 55-52 lead with 1 minute left and made both free throws with 24 seconds left to make it 57-52.

"My guards are the strong point of my team," Tampa Bay Tech coach Adrian Johnson said.

Tech trailed 48-45 with 4:28 remaining, but consecutive 3-pointers from Kevin Templeton gave the Titans a 51-48 lead.

Going into the game, Tech senior guard Dezmond Walker was averaging 19.5 points per game. He finished with 12 points Monday. Walker said his teammates picked up the slack when his shot wasn't falling.

King's 6-foot-7 junior forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick led the Lions (4-2, 1-2) with 27 points, 13 rebounds, one block and one assist.

BRANDON 68, WHARTON 48: Brandon's senior backcourt tandem of Tarron Stewart and Blake Allen was too much to handle as the Eagles routed Wharton in a Class 5A-District 8 matchup.

Allen led the Eagles (5-0) with 27 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Stewart added 17 points as Wharton had no answer for the duo. Marcus Morrison added 11 points. Center Evan Ravenel only scored four points as he was plagued with foul trouble.

"I think they are pretty darn good players," Brandon coach Mark Hermann said. "You can win with those guys, they are great guards. They are college-level guards and when you have college-level guards you can win at the high school level."

Allen took over for Brandon in the second half, scoring 19 of his 27 points in the half. He scored 10 in a 14-7 run that gave the Eagles a 50-33 lead.

Wharton senior forward Derek Holmes kept the Wildcats (1-5) in the game early as he scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half, including three 3-pointers.

COOLEY GETS 1,000TH: Plant junior guard Sheldon Cooley surpassed the 1,000 point mark Monday during his team's 79-38 win against Leto. Cooley finished with 24 points and now has 1,008 career points.
