Nine former prep football standouts who graced the Tampa Bay area were selected for the Greatest 100 Players from the First 100 Years, a list released Tuesday by the FHSAA in conjunction with the state organization's commemoration of the first 100 years of high school football in Florida.
Tampa Catholic WR Darrell Jackson, Jefferson RB Rick Casares, Chamberlain OL Forrest Blue, Hernando DL Jerome Brown, Hillsborough LB Steve Kiner, St. Petersburg Catholic DL Marty Lyons, Tampa Bay Tech DL Ted Washington, and Robinson QB John Reaves and RB Larry Smith were selected.
Media representatives from around the state, including The Tampa Tribune, submitted nominations for the list, and the final selections were made by a panel comprised by the FHSAA. The Tribune was not involved in the selection process.

HOOPS TO WAIT: Whenever Largo's football season ends, wide receiver Reggie McCray won't get much rest. That's because he's a very good basketball player as well.
McCray is arguably Largo's top basketball player on one of Pinellas County's top basketball programs. But when he, and fellow football player and linebacker Mike Marry, join the basketball Packers is up in the air depending on how the Packers fare against Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas in Friday's Class 5A state semifinal game.
While Largo basketball coach Phil Price wants McCray, a 6-foot-2 forward, to rejoin the team, he's content with seeing McCray continue in football.
"Yeah, it sets us back," Price said of not having McCray and Marry. "But we want them to win. Those two will be very integral parts of our team. Hopefully, they won't get there for two more weeks. As long as I can have them by the Christmas tournaments. In basketball it's all about who gets hot in the playoffs."
Price noted if somehow the Packers win their next two games, it could positively influence his basketball squad.
"They will come in with a winning attitude and be expecting to win," Price said. "You love winners. They will come in with a good attitude and be strong."
Despite playing in such an important game, Price is hoping McCray isn't totally forgetting basketball.
"I just hope he's shooting free throws," Price said. "I asked him to just go shoot 100 free throws at the park. You don't have to work out, just stand there and shoot free throws. Don't run, don't play. Just shoot free throws."
