Steve Spurrier
YEAR: 1966 (Senior)
CONTENDERS: QB Bob Griese (Purdue), HB Nick Eddy (Notre Dame), QB Gary Beban (UCLA), RB Floyd Little (Syracuse).
HIGHLIGHTS: Spurrier had led the Gators to a 6-0 record - including a 28-7 win at LSU - leading up to the final game before Heisman ballots were due. The Saturday before the due date, Spurrier threw for 259 yards and kicked a game-winning 40-yard field goal with two minutes remaining. The performance was chronicled in The New York Times. The following week, Spurrier was summoned to the home of UF President J. Wayne Reitz, where he learned he had won the Heisman.
Danny Wuerffel
YEAR: 1996 (Senior)
CONTENDERS: RB Troy Davis (Iowa State), QB Jake Plummer (Arizona State), OT Orlando Pace (Ohio State), RB Warrick Dunn (Florida State)
HIGHLIGHTS: Wuerffel threw for 3,625 yards and an SEC-record 39 touchdowns in the regular season. He threw for 462 yards in a win at Arkansas and threw six touchdown passes in the SEC title game against Alabama. After winning the Heisman, Wuerffel capped his season by throwing for three touchdowns and running for another to lead the Gators to a 52-20 win against Florida State. The win clinched Florida's first national title.
