ST. PETERSBURG - A lawyer was arrested today on charges he stole roughly half a million dollars he was supposed to distribute to the heirs of two estates, police said.
Martin Kirby Watson, 47, who has an office in St. Petersburg, surrendered at Pinellas County Jail to face two counts of first-degree grand theft.
Sgt. Kevin Smith of the economic crimes unit said Watson stole $244,623 from the estate of Evelyn Cromwell and $256,446 from the estate of Julia Cooke.
The money had been deposited in Watson's bank account, the idea being that it would be distributed to the women's heirs. He used the money to cover personal and professional expenses, Smith said.
