TAMPA - Police are checking students at Blake High School today to make sure they are wearing seatbelts as they enter and leave the downtown Tampa campus.

Across the Bay in Tarpon Springs, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and a student safety group are handing out 250 movie tickets this afternoon to students wearing seatbelts and displaying good driving habits at East Lake High School.

The Blake High checks are part of a regular effort by the Tampa Police Department to promote safe driving among teens – who chock up more fatalities in traffic accidents than any other age group, Cpl. Jared Douds said.

The estimated national cost of police-reported crashes involving drivers 15 to 20 years old is close to $42.3 billion, Douds said.

The enforcement effort began at 6:45 a.m. at the school, 1701 North Boulevard, Tampa.

Pinellas deputies are working with the Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter at East Lake, 1300 Silver Eagle Drive. The movie tickets were donated by the Anthony Telesca Foundation.
