The answer man keeps plugging away even during the holiday season.

The question of the week comes from M.L. in Brandon, who wants tips on how to audition for "Big Brother."

"I read where an audition for 'Big Brother' is going to be held in Tampa. Is this for the shows that are going to air in February? I have read your coverage of TV auditions before in the Tribune and I wonder if you have any tips on how to get selected. Also, they are holding auditions in 14 cities and you can send in an audition tape to CBS, so is it even worth going to the audition here?"

Well, M.L., I have covered auditions for "The Bachelor," "The Apprentice," "America's Next Top Model," "Fear Factor," "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune," and each one was just a little different. The most important thing to remember is that "Big Brother" is an unscripted drama, so they need characters. Outgoing, type-A personalities have the best shot.

Producer Allison Grodner has said that show officials are looking for interesting personalities, diverse backgrounds and different points of view. It's always best to audition in person.

Tampa is the final and 15th open casting call for the upcoming season. The auditions are scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Dubliner Irish Pub, 2307 W. Azeele St. You have to be older than 21 and able to spend up to three months locked in a house with people who want to see you leave.

DOGGONE GOOD: Rob Johnson is the winner of this week's trivia quiz. He was first to e-mail me with the scoop on the 1960s TV show that had a dog with no name.

Ron Witzel, M.D. Jones and David Fagen also knew that the cute pooch on "Petticoat Junction" was simply referred to as "dog." Rescued from an animal shelter, this mutt was named Higgins, but he went on to greater fame as Benji.

Rob wins a DVD of "The Dog Whisperer," and the rest of you get to be honorary citizens of Hooterville.

This week's trivia challenge: Name the radio station, the hosts and the program where comedian Dan Whitney got his stage name. The winner gets Whitney's new Christmas CD.
