5 Questions With Shawnta Snakovsky

Shawnta Snakovsky, a senior guard at Sickles, was a first-team All-Hillsborough County selection last season. This season, she has helped the Gryphons to a 9-0 start while averaging 21.9 points, 5.8 steals and five rebounds per game.

When did you realize you were better at basketball than most other girls?

It was probably in seventh grade. I went to Walker Middle School and I was scoring like 20 points a game there. That's when I kind of realized things on the court were coming easier for me than it was for others.

Have you gotten any scholarship offers from colleges?

I've gotten a lot of interest from some smaller schools, but we'll just have to wait and see how everything plays out. I know I definitely don't want basketball to end after high school. I hope to make basketball a big part of my college experience.

How would you describe what type of player you are?

I'm a team player. All I want to do is just win. I'm not worried about scoring a lot of points. Winning is the most important thing to me. If I'm on a break by myself and I see a teammate out in front, I'm going to pass her the ball. Sometimes, though, I get in trouble for passing it too much.

Like a lot of athletes today, you're sporting quite a few tattoos. How many do you have and when did you get your first one?

I have five total and I got the first one when I was a freshman.

Do any of them have special meanings?

I have my mom's initials on my wrist and my grandma's name in Greek on my neck because they are the most important people in my life and I love them so much. I have praying hands on my right arm because of my faith; I'm Catholic. I have a cross with the word "Blessed" on my left arm because I feel blessed with my family and basketball. And I have "Love is Pain" on my right leg.
