TAMPA - University of South Florida coach Jim Leavitt celebrated his 51st birthday Wednesday as the Bulls began preparations for the Sun Bowl.
"It was good to get back out here," Leavitt said. "We needed this."
USF (9-3), which will face Oregon (8-4) in the New Year Eve's bowl, will get looks at some of the younger players during the early portion of the bowl workouts before focusing strictly on the Ducks.
"We're thinking about Oregon, but we're going to mix different things in right now," Leavitt said. "The week before Christmas is when we'll turn all our attention to Oregon."
NO TIMETABLE: Northern Illinois spokeswoman Donna Turner said there is no timetable for the hiring of the Huskies' head football coach, and the school won't comment on candidates.
USF defensive line coach Dan McCarney interviewed for the position, The Tampa Tribune reported Wednesday.
NO BULL: Virginia's Chris Long won the Hendricks Award on Wednesday, given to the top defensive end in college football. USF sophomore George Selvie was among the finalists, but Long received a record 60 percent of the votes.
