BRANDON - A car struck a Bloomingdale High School student crossing a road to get to a school bus this morning, resulting in the teen being taken to a hospital and the bus driver – after calling in the accident – being checked to see whether she had gone into labor.
"She is pregnant and she was having what might have been labor pains," said Hillsborough County School District spokeswoman Linda Cobbe. "She was taken to the hospital and checked out, but they sent her home."
"No baby," Cobbe said.
The 6:48 a.m. accident occurred at Bryan Road and Bryan Manor Drive, said Hillsborough County sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter.
Luis Albert Oliveras, 14, of 504 Oakhurst St., Brandon, was crossing a road to reach the bus when he was hit by a passing 1999 Honda driven by Carolina Audi, 17, of 622 Rapid Falls Drive, Brandon, Carter said.
The bus was stopped, and the red lights were flashing, she said.
Audi was cited for passing a stopped school bus, she said.
It was the bus's first stop, Carter said.
In a frenzy, the bus driver, Lana Bryant, 36, of 9455 Harney Road, Thonotosassa, called 911, and in all the excitement she complained of abdominal pains that might have been labor pains, Carter said.
"She was pregnant enough," Carter said, although it was unknown how many months along Bryant is in her pregnancy.
Bryant was transported to Brandon Regional Hospital for observation before she was sent home.
Oliveras was taken to Tampa General Hospital and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
