A Temple Terrace man tried to avoid arrest Thursday by jumping off a third-story balcony, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Norris Nathaniel Mincey Jr. landed on a truck and wound up in Tampa General Hospital, where he was listed Thursday in critical condition.
Deputies arrested Mincey, 31, at 12:30 a.m. after an incident at 8207 E. Adamo Drive, Room 311. The incident began when an argument turned physical and Mincey struck his 20-year-old girlfriend in the face and chest, pulled her hair and then fled on foot, deputies say.
"They were arguing. They got physical. She left," sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. "Then she came back, and they started arguing again. He started hitting her, pulling her hair, and at one point he actually spit on her."
The woman called deputies for help.
A deputy spoke with her, walked her back to the room and saw Mincey in a hallway, Carter said.
Mincey had a "large bulge on his left upper hip," which turned out to be a bag filled with drugs, she said.
Here's what happened after that, according to arrest documents:
Mincey pushed the deputy and tried to flee but fell to the floor.
The deputy tried to hold Mincey down, but Mincey reached for the deputy's belt. The deputy pushed off Mincey, removed a Taser and gave Mincey commands.
Mincey didn't comply.
Mincey attempted to jump off the balcony but instead said he was giving up. He ran to the deputy and tried to push the deputy again.
The deputy attempted to use the Taser "with negative results."
Then Mincey turned around, jumped off the balcony and landed on a red truck. When the deputy ran downstairs, Mincey got up, fled east and tried to climb a 6-foot wooden fence. The deputy arrested him.
The nature of his injuries was not available.
Mincey had a bag containing 89.2 grams of cocaine and several small plastic bags containing a green, leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana, officials said.
He also had more than $1,000 in cash.
Mincey, of 9407 Channing Circle, Apt. 2601, was charged with felony trafficking in cocaine, possession of marijuana, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence. He also was arrested on five warrants charging delivery and possession of cocaine, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
In July 2004, Mincey was released from prison after spending nearly three years for battery on a law enforcement officer and cocaine charges, state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger said.
In August 1997, he was freed from prison after spending more than two years for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and cocaine charges, Plessinger said.
No bail has been set in Mincey's most-recent arrest.
