PARIS - A bomb hidden in a package delivered to a law office several blocks from the Arc de Triomphe in central Paris exploded Thursday, killing a secretary and seriously injuring a lawyer, French police said.
Law enforcement authorities said they had not yet determined a motive for the booby-trapped wooden box addressed to lawyers in a firm that handles real estate, divorce and other commercial and civil cases.
The offices of lawyer Catherine Gouet-Jenselme, where the bomb exploded just after 1 p.m., is across the hall from a Jewish research foundation and three floors above the law offices where French President Nicolas Sarkozy once worked.
"So far we don't have any leads," said Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, who rushed back to Paris from a European Union meeting in Belgium. She condemned the attack as "cowardly and odious."
