LAND O' LAKES - As people in Pasco County rush to make preparations for this year's holiday season, whether it's by picking up a last-minute gift or getting a hairdo for the holidays, local merchants are providing them convenient opportunities to help those in need.
Fantastic Sam's The Original Family Haircutters, 21633 Village Lakes Shopping Center in Land O' Lakes, is hosting an angel tree "Sponsor a Child for Christmas" effort on behalf of the Pasco County Foster/Adoptive Association.
Patrons can pick up a slip of Christmas stationery listing the name, age, clothing sizes and gift preferences of a child in need.
"We put these papers on a Christmas tree and on our mirrors," said Paula Berry, manager/hairstylist at Fantastic Sam's.
Participants are not required to fulfill the child's entire wish list, and may purchase gift cards for their beneficiaries. They may return all items unwrapped to Fantastic Sam's by Dec. 15; event organizers will pick up last-minute gifts.
The Village Lakes Fantastic Sam's will help another philanthropic organization today, when it hosts an all-day Cut-A-Thon to benefit Mason Dixon's Christmas Wish Fund, an organization that, according to www.masondixonchristmas wishfund.com, "helps families that are in the Tampa Bay area. Most families we help are those that have fallen on hard times due to job loss, an illness, lack of child support or other mishaps. Generally, these families have fallen through the cracks of public assistance and just need a helping hand. We provide the families with cash, a check, toys and/or certificates."
"We will donate $1 for every haircut that day to the Christmas Wish Fund," said Berry.
