TAMPA - U.S. postal inspectors said Friday that they are investigating "numerous complaints" of mail theft at the University of Tampa.
University leaders say they asked the post office to investigate after receiving an increased number of complaints about lost or delayed mail, or mail that was tampered with, UT spokesman Eric Cardenas said.
Mailroom problems were first reported this week in the university's student newspaper, The Minaret. The story featured anecdotes from students who said they missed medication their parents had sent or had missed birthday cards filled with money.
Postal inspector Doug Smith only would confirm his office is investigating, and wouldn't release any details or verify the nature of the complaints. Cardenas wouldn't say whether anyone at the university has been disciplined or fired as a result.
