No Place To Raise Money
Regarding "Plates Should I.D. Vehicles, Nothing Else" (Our Opinion, Dec. 3):
I agree 100 percent with the Tribune's editorial. License plates should only ID vehicles and nothing else. It is ridiculous the number of "specialty" plates there are.
The state of Florida is the only one who should benefit from revenue generated by a vehicle tag. There are plenty of ways for charities to raise money, and the back of a car is not it - not to mention the safety hazard created for law enforcement unable to ID a vehicle. One common tag is all that is needed.

Inmate Opportunities
Talk about majoring on the minors; what is the down side of raising "$32 million for many notable causes"? In some cases that may be the only way some people donate to charities or causes.
Let us look at another aspect of this license plate matter. I went to the Internet after reading your opinion to find out who makes the plates for Florida and found they are made at Raiford prison. Inmate workers are trained in 43 different skills while making our license plates. As the person being interviewed at the prison said, "the challenge is not so much making the plates but getting the orders correct that are sent out to the over 300 agencies that order them by type." The fact that they are making our normal plates and now the 108 specialty plates gives the inmates more opportunities to not only manufacture, but correctly distribute. What is the down side?

Not The State's Business
It's about time somebody spoke out about ID plates for vehicles. I have been voicing my opinion as one who definitely did not want specialty plates since their inception in 1987.
I don't understand why people can't donate to their favorite charity at least several times a year without having a license place to let people know that they donated a very small token to some unknown charity.
I think you have a very good idea in placing a tag in front of the car. I also think that a substantial contribution should be donated to one's favorite charity. Let's get the state out of this business.
