NEW PORT RICHEY - Wagging tails and inquisitive pups were unleashed this week on the city's first dog park, in Meadows Park off Larch Lane.

The grand opening saw wet noses sniffing out the new canine playground.

Folks from SPCA Suncoast and the city recreation staff, as well as Santa Claus, were on hand to take pictures with pups Thursday afternoon.

The park, which backs up to the James E. Grey Preserve, was created after city parks chief Elaine Smith told the city council members in August about residents asking for a dog park.

Although there are several run by the county - the closest is in Holiday - the Meadows Park facility is the first for the city, she said.

Now, west Pasco County dog parents have a place to relax on newly installed benches while their pets exercise and mingle with others inside the fenced-in area.

Dogs should be unleashed in the bullpen that opens to separate enclosures: one for large dogs, the other for small dogs.
Park amenities include canine-height water fountains, poop scooper bag dispensers, decorative fire hydrants and a shower area.

City employees Frank South, Bill Cada and Bill Griffin built the park, which was funded entirely by donations.

The volunteer organization at Community Hospital of New Port Richey gave $4,000; Korrect Kritters contributed money for a picnic table and signs; and Unique Trophies donated a sponsors board.

The dog park helps make use of the underutilized area and has cut down on the vandalism that often occurred there, Smith said.

"It's a beautiful little neighborhood," she said. "I hope people will appreciate the park and take care of it."

The park is open from dawn to dusk.

The New Port Richey Parks and Recreation Department is looking for sponsors so city workers can install shade covers over the benches and plant trees.

To be a sponsor, contact Smith at (727) 841-4560.
