DADE CITY - Since at least August, dozens of residents in areas near Dade City have come home to find someone had broken in and taken prized possessions.
A recent break in the cases, however, linked them and led to the arrests of two suspects on Thursday.
Levon Winston Hughes, 19, and Roberto Herrera Jr., 18, are charged in 20 burglaries and could face charges in dozens more.
The pair came to the attention of Pasco County sheriff's Detective Zak Arey, who drove the young men through several neighborhoods where burglaries had happened since the summer, sheriff's office spokesman Doug Tobin said. The suspects pointed out houses where they broke in and stole tens of thousands of dollars in property while the residents weren't home, Tobin said.
Houses on Sunburst Drive, Old Trilby Road, Frazee Hill Road, Summers Ridge Drive and St. Joe Road were among those hit by Hughes and Herrera, according to reports. Electronics, jewelry, cash, clothing and handguns were taken.
The two face charges of burglary, grand theft and armed burglary in 20 break-ins. Arey said they could be responsible for as many as 60 total in the area, Tobin said.
Hughes, of 36841 Church Ave., was being held at the Land O' Lakes Jail on Friday with bail set at $380,500.
Herrera, of 37017 Tait Ave., was arrested Nov. 21 on charges of burglary, dealing in stolen property and violation of probation. He also was in the Land O' Lakes Jail with total bail set at $241,013.
