ORLANDO - Justin Feagle rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns, and Jordan Spennato kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to lift Delray Beach American Heritage past Tallahassee North Florida Christian 31-28 in the Florida high school Class 1A championship game Friday night at the Florida Citrus Bowl.
It is the first championship in school history for the Stallions (13-1). North Florida Christian, coached by former Florida State quarterback Casey Weldon, dropped its second straight championship game.
North Florida Christian (12-2) tied the game at 28 on Clint Trickett's third touchdown to Melvin Ray, a 72-yarder, with 2:26 remaining. American Heritage drove 57 yards to set up Spennato's game-winner on his first field-goal attempt all season.
Feagle also threw for 70 yards. Trickett finished with 307 yards, with Ray making five catches for 146 yards and Darrius McQueen posting 10 catches for 117.
The teams combined for 680 total yards, but also had a combined 26 penalties for 195 yards in a game that featured four ties and three lead changes.
Jupiter Christian Wins 1st State Championship
ORLANDO - Marshyl Rothman scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lift Jupiter Christian to a win against Tallahassee Florida A&M in the Florida state Class 1B championship game at the Florida Citrus Bowl.
The Eagles (13-1) won their first championship in the school's fifth year of varsity football. FAMU (9-5) was vying for its second straight championship and fifth overall.
Rothman's 1-yard run with 9:31 remaining put the Eagles ahead 20-14. He added an insurance touchdown on a 9-yarder with 2:01 left to play.
Austin Lewis and Will Powers each rushed for a touchdown and gained 89 and 63 yards, respectively, for Jupiter Christian as it twice came from behind.
FAMU took a 6-0 lead three plays into the game on Ravon Johnson's 37-yard pass to Jamorris Stephens. Jupiter Christian tied it at 6 on Lewis' 4-yard run with 9:10 remaining, but the Rattlers regained the lead with 50 seconds remaining on a 77-yard Richard Watson touchdown.
Powers, who also had five tackles and 1.5 sacks, closed FAMU's lead to 14-12 on a 13-yard third-quarter run.
Watson gained 131 yards on 13 carries for the Rattlers, who managed only 171 yards of total offense to Jupiter Christian's 240. FAMU gained only 17 yards in the second half.
