TAMPA - University of South Florida sophomore WR Colby Erskin, who had won a starting position before the season before suffering a torn ACL, has opted not to try to return for the Sun Bowl.
Erskin is about a month ahead of his rehabilitation schedule and said last month he wanted to play in the Sun Bowl. Instead, the school will apply for a medical hardship that would give him another year of eligibility.
"We'll try to get a year back," USF coach Jim Leavitt said. "I don't know what the NCAA will do, but we'll ask and see what they say."
Erskin is the Bulls' fastest player, having run a sub-4.3 40 in the spring.
JACKSON LOOKS GOOD: Senior WR Amarri Jackson, who injured his knee at Connecticut on Oct. 27, will be ready for the Sun Bowl.
"Amarri looked as good today as I've seen him in three months," Leavitt said. "He really ran hard, worked hard. He also returned some punts well."
Despite missing 4 1/2 games, Jackson is USF's sixth-leading receiver with 21 catches for 247 yards and two TDs.
ODDS AND ENDS: RB Mike Ford, WR Carlton Mitchell and OL Zach Hermann were named honorable mention freshman All-American by the Sporting News. ... CB Trae Williams and Taurus Johnson worked some at returning punts during Friday's practice. ... Leavitt visited El Paso, Texas, on Thursday as part of a Sun Bowl luncheon. "It was nice, the people were great, very hospitable," Leavitt said. "I was very, very impressed. Real good people. They were tremendous."
